February: How can I use Church music to learn about the plan of salvation?

Music can teach us about the Gospel
Helpers: Ask for a piano player and for people to grab hymn books.
Introduction
  • A few weeks ago, we found scriptures that described our Heavenly Father. Abby chose D&C 25:12. (Have her re-read it) He loves music and he uses music to teach us.
  • Quote 1. How many of us actually listen to the lyrics we sing during sacrament?
Favorite Hymn Activity (15 min)
  • Pick one of your favorite hymns, come up and share why, and pick a verse for us to sing. (Ask Laurel to play the piano)
Oh My Father (20 min)
  • After reading/listening to the lyrics to the hymn, “O My Father”, write what it teaches about these three phases of the plan of salvation and write what they find under the appropriate headings.
    • Pre-mortal life
    • Mortal life
    • Life After Death

Quote 1: "The first Presidency taught, "Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end." Most principles of the gospel, including those related to the plan of salvation, are taught powerfully through hymns and other church music.

February: What is the role of agency in learning the gospel?

Agency
Activity
  • Ask them to think of the choices they have made so far today and list as many as they can in one minute (write on board)
    • Which of your choices today do you think was the most important?
    • Where did you get your ability to choose?
  • Moses 7:32 - Explain that Heavenly Father has given us agency—the power to choose between good and evil. But agency is more than just the ability to do what we want; agency is one of the most basic and important of all gospel laws.
  • Quote1 - MAZE ANALOGY
Consequences
  • Quote 2 - Emphasize to class members that when we make choices, we must accept the consequences. We are free to choose our actions, but we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions. The consequences of unwise choices can put us in a position where our choices, and thus our freedom, are greatly limited.
    • Some people think that when we obey the commandments we give up our freedom. What do you guys think about that? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
    • How do we lose freedom by making bad choices? How do we gain freedom by making good choices?
    • How have you seen this happen in your own life?
Eternal Life
  • 2 Nephi 2:27  -According to this verse, what is our main choice in this life? (To choose liberty and eternal life or captivity and death.)
    • How do we choose liberty and eternal life? What choices have you made this week that lead you toward liberty and eternal life?
    • How does breaking the commandments of God lead to captivity and death?
    • What are some seemingly small choices we face each week that, if made improperly, could gradually lead to captivity and spiritual death? (Answers may include whether or not to pray daily, attend church meetings each week, obey your parents, be completely honest in your schoolwork.
Testimonys (Jay & Arianna goodbye)
Quotes

  1. “Your agency, the right to make choices, is not given so that you can get what you want. This divine gift is provided so that you will choose what your Father in Heaven wants for you. That way He can lead you to become all that He intends you to be. That path leads to glorious joy and happiness” - Elder Scott

  1. “We are free to obey or to ignore the spirit and the letter of the law. But the agency granted to man is a moral agency (see D&C 101:78). We are not free to break our covenants and escape the consequences”  - Elder Packer

January: How does the Holy Ghost help me teach the gospel?

Teaching By the Spirit

We have talked about how to recognize the spirit and different ways we can see the hand of God in our lives. Now we want to apply that recognition into something greater.  Quote 1.
Simon Says (5min)
  • What skill did you have to focus on to know what Simon was saying?
    • LISTEN. Quote 2
Group Activity (20 min)
  • How to plan a mini lesson
  1. Begin with a prayer to be guided by the spirit.
  2. Read material you will teach together.
  3. Come up with an idea of what you want to focus on when you teach.
  • Split into pairs.
  • You will be studying a topic to teach to another pair in the class. (Hand out copied pages from PMG - pgs 31-32, 36-38,51-53, 61-66, 85) You have 10 min:
    • Who is God?/Godhead
    • What is the Book of Mormon?
    • The Restoration
    • The Atonement
    • The Spirit World
    • Faith
    • Repentance
    • Baptism
    • Gift of the Holy Ghost
    • Enduring to the End
    • Eternal Marriage
How do you feel the Spirit lead you
  • Planning? Teaching?
Quotes

  1. “As the Lord’s servant, you are to do His work in His way and by His power. Some missionaries feel confident that they know how to be successful. Others lack such confidence. Remember, however, that your confidence and faith should be in Christ, not in yourself. Rely on the Spirit rather than your own talents and abilities. Trust the Spirit to guide you in every aspect of your work. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that the Spirit is basic to teach and preaching.”

  1. President Boyd K. Packer taught: “THe voice of the SPirit is described in the scripture as being neither ‘loud’ nor ‘harsh.’ It is ‘not a voice of thunder, neither… a voice of great tumultuous noise.’ But rather, ‘a still small voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper,’ and it can ‘pierce even to  the very soul’ and ‘cause [the heart] to burn.’ The Spirit does not get our attention by shouting or shaking us with a heavy hand. Rather it whispers. It caresses so gently that if we are preoccupied we may not feel it at all.

January: How can I learn to see Heavenly Father’s hand in all things?

Heavenly Father’s Hand in all things

"Tender Mercies of the Lord"
  • Begin class, by inviting the youth to think about what that phrase means and to share their thoughts.
  • Show the video: "The Tender Mercies of The Lord".

Add On Game
  • "Heavenly Father has.... (then say something that Heavenly Father has given them or done in their life)."  Then the next person will say, "Heavenly Father has... (then will say what the first person said and then say something that Heavenly Father has given or done for them). " Continue going around the circle with each class member saying what the class members before had said and adding what Heavenly Father has given or done for them.

What we must do?
  • Then discuss as a group what we must do to receive the tender mercies of the Lord. Invite the youth to continue to acknowledge their Heavenly Father's hand in all things.

What are ways we can remember God's kindness?"
  • thank Him in prayer
  • keep a gratitude journal, or just write things you're grateful for in your regular journal
  • tell others
  • bear testimony of it
