Why has God given us commandments?
- “As Many as I Love, I Rebuke and Chasten” Elder Christofferson - Split in 6 groups and ask why God has given us commandments.
- Group 1 read first paragraph.
- A: Return to live with him
- A: To prepare to live the celestial law
- Group 2 read second paragraph.
- A: Become like him
- Make list of attributes that God has. (Loving, Merciful, Righteous, Wise, Respectful, Serviceful, Provider, Protector, Teacher, Perfect, Exemplar, Patriarch (honored from moral character), Disciplinarian, Spiritual leader

- The commandments are essentially a recipe to become the best person we can be and to be like Heavenly Father.
- What commandments help us develop those attributes? (refer to previous list)
- No other Gods before me - Respectful
- No graven images - Patriarch
- No taking Lord’s name in vain - Respectful
- Keep the sabbath day holy - Spiritual Leader
- Honor thy father and thy mother - Loving
- No murder - Merciful
- No committing adultery - Loving
- Do not steal
- Do not bear false witness (lying)
- Do not covet
- Word of Wisdom - Wise
- Chastity - Loving, Respectful
- Tithing - Provider
- Missionary work - Teacher, Provider
- Multiply and Replenish the Earth (Have a family) - Protector, Provider, Teacher, Disciplinarian, Spiritual Leader
- Love thy neighbor - Serviceful
- ALL - Righteous, Exemplar
- Then we become perfect. D&C 88:22 - Live celestial life on earth.
- D&C 82:8–10 - God has promised us eternal life if we keep his commandments.
