October: How can I use the scriptures to help others become more Christlike?

Becoming Like Heavenly Father

Why has God given us commandments?
  • “As Many as I Love, I Rebuke and Chasten” Elder Christofferson - Split in 6 groups and ask why God has given us commandments.
  • Group 1 read first paragraph.
    • A: Return to live with him
    • A: To prepare to live the celestial law
  • Group 2 read second paragraph.
    • A: Become like him
    • Make list of attributes that God has. (Loving, Merciful, Righteous, Wise, Respectful, Serviceful, Provider, Protector, Teacher, Perfect, Exemplar, Patriarch (honored from moral character), Disciplinarian, Spiritual leader

Ingredient example/activity
  • With these ingredients, could you make the item with the instructions given?
  • The commandments are essentially a recipe to become the best person we can be and to be like Heavenly Father.
    • What commandments help us develop those attributes? (refer to previous list)
      • No other Gods before me - Respectful
      • No graven images - Patriarch
      • No taking Lord’s name in vain - Respectful
      • Keep the sabbath day holy - Spiritual Leader
      • Honor thy father and thy mother - Loving
      • No murder - Merciful
      • No committing adultery - Loving
      • Do not steal
      • Do not bear false witness (lying)
      • Do not covet
      • Word of Wisdom - Wise
      • Chastity - Loving, Respectful
      • Tithing - Provider
      • Missionary work - Teacher, Provider
      • Multiply and Replenish the Earth (Have a family) - Protector, Provider, Teacher, Disciplinarian, Spiritual Leader
      • Love thy neighbor - Serviceful
      • ALL - Righteous, Exemplar
    • Then we become perfect. D&C 88:22 - Live celestial life on earth.
    • D&C 82:8–10 - God has promised us eternal life if we keep his commandments.

Conclusion - Questions to leave with
  • How might it affect their attitudes toward obedience to the commandments?
  • How might it affect the choices they make?
